Decorating and designing like the professionals is not a topic that we could ever cover in a few days! Nor could I advise you on everything there is to know about it...I only wish! But this week we are going to focus on what I know best...window treatments.
In order to start acting like we know what we are talking about, we need to know the correct terminology - you know, so we can sound official and all!
I always get a good chuckle when one of my friends asks me to help design window treatments for them. Inevitably the very first thing out of their mouth is, "So, I wanna get some curtains!"
Ok, lets stop right there...we do not call them curtains, we want to refer to them as window treatments. Look, I even looked it up for you in the dictionary:
Curtain: (noun) A hanging screen intended to darken or conceal, and admitting of being drawn back or up, and reclosed at pleasure.
See what I mean? Window treatments are not used to darken a room or to be a screen to hide what is on the other side. Window treatments are designed to make your windows beautiful, to make your room look bigger and to draw attention to your space.
If you want to keep the light out or keep your neighbors from peering in, go ahead and get you some blinds or shudders or panels on a traversing rod (I will explain later) but curtains are not what we want in our homes. Window treatments are meant to show off windows and make your space look bigger.
The scrumptious pieces of fabric and trim that we have on our windows, the kind that can be seen in the magazines, they are window treatments! Wow, I feel better already. So, say it with me...window treatments, not curtains! Perfect, you are sounding like a professional already!
PS - I couldn't get any good pictures of my window treatments today...it is a little bit trickier than I thought it would be.....so the picture above is of the new fabrics/trims in my living room. I didn't think you would mind!
