SHE being my sister Shaena!
Here are Shaena's own words as she describes her recent (well last summer) trip to Uganda.
I recently returned from an amazing 3 week trip to Uganda. Our church has a relationship with a indigenous organization called AOET (www.aoet.org). The purpose of our trip was to come alongside the teachers in AOET's primary school and run several teacher workshops. We spent a few days observing the teachers in their classrooms with 50-70 kids each. I was amazed at their ability to work with such large groups of students and get a lot accomplished.
The kids were so eager to learn and took their schooling seriously...it is a privilege for such poor
children to be able to attend school. School fees are not easy to come by in such extreme impoverished communities. Many of the students at Rehaboth are sponsored through AOET's child sponsorship program and that is how they are able to attend school.
God taught me so much on this journey. I expected to go to Uganda and feel sorry for them because of the conditions they live it, but I was amazed and overwhelmed at how happy the Ugandans are. Their family and community mean the world to them and their faith is so amazingly strong. I believe, in many ways, the Ugandans are richer than us here in the US.
We have so many distractions...computers, e-mail, TV, telephones...they have none of that...and yet it does not make a difference to them.
The children are beautiful and have a great understanding of the blessings God has given them because they are able to go to school...you will never hear a Ugandan child complain about school or homework...it is a treasure to them.
God changed me on my trip and I now have a renewed passion for His people around the world. Uganda is an amazing country with amazing people. I can't wait to return and see my friends again!
