A Style All Her Own...

This morning I spent a whole hour putting together a little dress for SYD to wear to Rodeo Day at school today. (yes, I live in Texas and Rodeo is a BIG deal here in Houston).

Maybe I should have started working on the dress yesterday or last week for that matter....but then that wouldn't really be my style now would it?!

Nonetheless, I started the dress this morning and finished one hour later just in time to get Syd dressed and a few pics taken!

Now, usually doing crafts are just NOT my style! But I decided to sew Syd a dress and make an exception to the NO craft rule.  I could either make a super cute dress for $7 or under OR spend 6x more than that on an outfit she will wear twice.  Clearly, I chose to save money and take one for the team.  I will do crafts if I can save money!  Cause' saving money for the things I really want...that is definitly my style!

So I decided to make the dress and I am so glad that I did.  It is so much fun watching Syd's own style shine! The dress is supposed to have two sleeves, one with a big bow.  But as you can see, her dress is what we would officially call "off the shoulder."

In her refusal to let me tie the ribbon on the right side of her shoulder, SYd created a look all her own...or maybe a statement if you will!  A look that says "Mommy, I will not wear that dress just because you want me to.  I will wear it the way I want to wear it!"

Ok, so she may not have had any deep and philisophical thoughts, but it reminded me just how independent Syd is and will be one day! She will be a leader. A trailblazer. A woman who doesn't just do things to meet the expectations of others. She will do it her way on her time table.

God help me!  These are the very things I love about her and the very things that will probably give me lots more gray hair and sleepless nights.  But I will always be thankful for her spirit.  Her spirit that is strong and independent.  A spirit just like her mama'!

Although I am not so sure I ever had her fashion sense haha! Check it out!

Is this what your gardening shoes look like?

It's how we roll over here at the Morris house!  Why where rubber boots or even tennis shoes when you could wear princess shoes to plant flowers?  And what about Mardi Gras?

(Syd...in the green dress with the purple headband! Holler back to the 80's ya'll)

Oh Lord, may I never find my daughter's spirit and independence any less endearing than I do today!

(thanks to Freshly Picked for the online tutorial on how to make a pillowcase dress)
