Why We Love Reading

It’s 1pm and the baby is finally sleeping.  I head to the coffee machine, wishing I was at Starbucks, and I make my best attempt at an iced coffee.  It’s no Starbucks but it will do.

The remnants of a well loved lunch are strewn about the kitchen floor. The baby doesn’t tolerate being fed anymore, he can do it himself!

So I open the back door and call the dogs away from their obsessive squirrel chase. Our furry friends gladly oblige and run into the kitchen to clean up the floor.

I grab my iced coffee and head to the couch.  Sydney meets me there.  She has our favorite blanket and her coloring books.  We are ready.

[insert cute photo of us on the couch together. If only I was that organized!]

We nestle in deep, we must be touching one another or this melancholy child assumes I am rejecting her very person.

We snuggle close and I begin to read. And we begin our adventures to far off lands where bravery and courage are daily norms.  We travel to magical lands with talking animals and with surprises awaiting us around every corner.

We learn that pigs can be quite endearing and we are crowned queens of far off lands and we promise to always rule just and fair.

We attend tea parties and search for imaginary monsters and we always always help our friends and neighbors with unwavering loyalty.

A love of stories and adventures….it’s the longing God placed in our hearts before the beginning of time.  It’s hidden deep within each of us and it creates a yearning only HE can fulfill. And fulfill he does.

His story is written in an ancient book whose words are alive and active for today and for all tomorrows.  So when we snuggle close and read adventures created in the minds of mere humans, we catch a glimpse of the epic adventure written by the uncreated.

For not only in fiction books are we royalty, not only in fiction books are we beckoned to travel the road less taken.  It's just that sometimes a wizard or a talking lion can help us see the truth!

“I am looking for someone to share in an adventure that I am arranging, and it’s very difficult to find anyone.”  Gandolf, The Hobbit

“I should think so – in these parts!  We are plain quiet folk and have no use for adventures.  Nasty disturbing uncomfortable things!  Make you late for dinner!  I can’t think what anybody sees in them.  Bilbo Baggins, The Hobbit

  1. I love this Sharee! Reminds me of a devotional we once did called Epic by John Eldridge. All the great stories are just retellings of The One Story.
