Misconceptions about Open Adoption

Is it weird?

This has to be the question we get asked the most when it comes to Eli’s open adoption.

And even though the question now seems quite ridiculous to us,  I do understand where people are coming from.  A few years ago I had lots of misconceptions of open adoptions….what they were, how they worked and who benefited the most.

And now through personal experience I can answer that question with great confidence.  NO, it is not weird.

The reason is simple.

Love

Eli has lots of people who love him and at the top of that list is his birth mom.

Love is what unites us.  Love is what calms fears.  Love is what makes life rich.

Love is never more clearly demonstrated than through sacrifice.

No one has greater love [no one has shown stronger affection] than to lay down (give up) his own life for his friends.

Nothing corrects our misconceptions more than God’s word.

And no one sacrifices more than a birth mom when it comes to adoption.

PS – we spent a day at Dewberry Farms with E’s birth mom. My heart was full watching the two of them together.

I love that she gave him his first pickle…

Who would have thought of giving a then 7 month old a pickle?

But she was right. He loved it.

He was none too happy when we eventually threw it away for fear he would never willingly part with it!
