Words to say when Beautiful doesn't come easy.

Beautiful.  It's the one word we are writing about over at Five Minute Friday.

Beautiful to Him.

This is what I want her to know. This is what she needs to know.  This is what I need to know.

We are beautiful to Him.

She wraps herself in a towel and sits on my lap.  Goggles perched on her forehead, the red rings under her eyes marks of a long afternoon in the pool.

"Mom, I don't think I am pretty."

"Do you remember that our feelings are not the truth?

"Yes, but I still think I am ugly."

I want so badly to throw my arms up in the air and tell her to just get over it.  How many times do I have to repeat to her the truth?  Why do we have to keep having this conversation?

Me.  "Who made you?"

Her:  "God did."

Me: "What else did God make?"

Her:  "God made all things."

Me:  "How did he make you?"

Her: "In his image."

Me: "Why did he make you?"

Her: "For his glory."

Me: "What does that make you?"

Her: "Beautiful to him."

And then I remember.  We repeat these words because we both need them.  We repeat these words to push out the untruths that surround us.  We repeat these words because they are life giving.

  1. Beautiful words to remember. As a boy mom, I haven't had to experience any girl's insecurities but my own, but I hope to have a daughter someday (soon?), so I will remember them if the time comes. It can be so hard to be a girl in this world, but your daughter is lucky that you are there to remind her she is beautiful.

    1. Thank you Jenni. I have a one year old boy and I wonder if there are not different things are little guys will struggle with? So glad God equips us to raise them despite ourselves!

  2. So wonderful to read this. I also believe that we repeat words because we are made in His image. He is the WORD made flesh. Speaking truthful words is a further imitation of His beauty and goodness and truth. Thank you for sharing this.

  3. Oh, I can so relate to this. I flashed back to my teenage years when I read it, but I also thought of last week. How much we need the reminder that we are beautiful in His eyes! Love this post...thank you! :)
